“You don’t need a mountain of experience to be an effective volunteer.  You just need a desire to make one person’s day just a little bit better.”

-Erin, AmeriCorps member

Just a few weeks ago we said good-bye to our 2008-09 AmeriCorps members, Kristen Bergh, Melanie DePaulis, Melissa Martin, Asmait Tewelde, and Adrienne Ward.  The work they did and the lives they touched as teachers in our classroom programs will always be remembered.  Although it was hard to say good-bye, with every ending comes a new beginning.  On Tuesday we welcome 4 new AmeriCorps members, all new to the Northern Virginia area.

Courtney comes to Virginia from Wisconsin where she worked at the YMCA in the adaptive fitness department.  They offered various classes for individuals with disabilities.  She said of her experience “I worked with amazing individuals who inspired me to be the best person I can be and who taught me how to find joy and happiness in every circumstance.”

One of the reasons Matt, from New York, decided to join the AmeriCorps team was to continue his experience of working with refugees and teaching English.  He found his teaching experience “…invaluable as I discovered that we can possess deep reservoirs of empathy for people who are otherwise complete strangers.”

“You don’t need a mountain of experience to be an effective volunteer.  You just need a desire to make one person’s day just a little bit better.”  Joining us from North Carolina, Erin’s passion for helping others is what brings her to the LCNV family.

Minta, from Tennessee, brings her experiences traveling abroad and commitment to hard work to the Literacy Council.  She believes that “When goals are shared, every person involved plays an important role and seemingly impossible projects can be achieved.”
