Connections for Hope Registration

Connections for Hope is finally open after much anticipation! We held registration on February 16th and enrolled two students, a couple from Peru. Minta and I are co-teaching at Connections for Hope, and we were nervous about what to do with only two students. We worried how we would fill the time, because we anticipated going through materials much faster than usual. As I drove to Herndon for our first class, all I could think about was, “What if I can’t get them to talk?” The minute they walked in the classroom, I could see the excitement on their faces and my nerves evaporated. We sat down at the table together and began to talk. They were easy to engage and, as we worked through the lesson I had planned, the conversation flourished. In my other classes, I get to know my students, but not like this. It was wonderful to have one-on-one time with them and learn about their lives, interests, goals, and dreams. I wish I had the opportunity to do this with all of my students.

As much as I am enjoying this experience of a more intimate classroom, I sincerely hope more students join our class at Connections for Hope. There is plenty of room in our beautiful classroom, so if you know anyone who lives near Herndon, please let them know that we will be holding a second registration tomorrow, on March 2 from 9:30-11:30, and it will be open enrollment throughout the session. Our Family Learning class is held from 9:30-11:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 13525 Dulles Technology Drive in Herndon.
