BeanTree Learning’s Book Donation Inspires

Support LCNV at Acumen Solutions 6th Annual Race for a Cause

Support the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia (LCNV) at the sixth annual Acumen Solutions Race for a Cause™ 8K and 1-Mile Fun Run on October 19, 2014 at 8:00 a.m.  LCNV has once again been selected by Acumen Solutions to participate as one of 10 charities benefiting from the Race for a Cause. The charity with the most registered supporters on race day wins First Place in the “race” for proceeds. Sign up today and be sure to select LCNV as your organization of choice  at http://www.theraceforacause.com.

Also, help make a difference in the lives of adult learners (see Mirna’s story in the flyer below)—a difference that directly impacts the next generation of learners and their families. LCNV must register a minimum of 100 racers who participate on race day  (October 19) in order to be eligible to receive the race proceeds. The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is offering  FREE English Conversation Practice classes at the James Lee Community Center Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12:05-1:30pm until 7/23, or at Mental Health America Fridays from 6:30-8:00pm until 8/1. One ESOL Classroom teacher kindly shared one student’s essay (with approval and with the teacher’s corrections).  The mission of the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is to teach adults the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English in order to empower them to participate more fully and confidently in their communities. LCNV students are beginning English language learners who read at or below a sixth grade level.

LCNV Fosters New American Citizens

Last year #LCNV English instruction helped 30 students to obtain their citizenship as a personal goal. Our volunteers have access to LCNV’s latest instructional resources in order to help students who need literacy skills to support their citizenship goals. Happy Independence Day!
