Imagine being unable to talk to your neighbors, make new friends, or do certain tasks at work. For LCNV learner Cu, this was his reality before he took English classes. Cu took LCNV classes at the Woodrow Wilson Library, one of many convenient locations where LCNV offers courses throughout Northern Virginia. If you know someone like Cu, please share this schedule of class sign-up times with them. Don’t forget, you can sign up for nearly any class at any location! Read Cu’s story, below:

“I have lived in the United States for eight months since I moved here from Vietnam. Learning English is hard but I want to learn because it makes my life better. Before I started studying English in the United States, I couldn’t ask the bus driver for directions or talk to my neighbors. I couldn’t make a new friend if they didn’t speak Vietnamese. I was unable to ask how to do tasks for my jobs. But since I have learned English at Woodrow Wilson Library [LCNV] taught by Lauren and two more teachers, my English has improved a lot. Now I can ask people for help if I don’t know something and I can make more friends anywhere, anytime if they know and understand English. I’m very confident communicating with people and my neighbors. Most importantly, I can solve my problems by myself. Finally, thanks for the class.”

Many of LCNV’s learners attend classes to help them interact with customers at work. LCNV learner Fikertemariam describes the importance of English in the workplace in her essay below. If you need to learn English for your job or any other reason, consider taking fall classes with the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia. Visit www.lcnv.org or call 703-237-0866 for more information. Sign-up opportunities begin this month.

“Learning English improves my life because I am able to help customers that come to my church store. I am able to tell them about the church clothes, Bibles, books and jewelry. I am also able to tell them how much something costs and give them their change. Learning English also changed my life because I am able to go to the store and buy food, clothes and things that I need.”
