The holiday season is in full swing, which means busy stores and crowded public places. For beginning-level English language learners without a mastery of English, an inability to speak or read fluently can make communication even harder during an already stressful time of year. Luckily, LCNV provides classes for English language learners to help improve their English skills. Read Mai’s story below.

If you would like to give the gift of literacy this holiday season, please consider supporting LCNV at lcnv.org/donate. Thank you.

“I am going to English class to [learn to] speak fluently. My English is not very good so I am afraid to talk [in case] someone will not understand [me].
I can now speak better English, and [want to] thank my teachers Corrie, Sue, and Oscar. I learned a lot in class.”

“In every country, people have their holidays. Every one is different and is connected to their history, religion, and culture. In the United States I met a remarkable holiday—Thanksgiving. I love this holiday with its focus on national history, the family, and yourself. The basis of Thanksgiving is the ability to thank and feel the need to thank and that is valuable for the soul. On this day people hurry to their family and say thanks. Already we have celebrated three Thanksgivings with our family.”

LCNV learner Muzlefa found her first experiences in the United States difficult due to her lack of English. She was unable to excel in her US Citizenship class without English, and wasn’t able to communicate with her doctor. This all began to change, however, when Muzlefa joined LCNV’s classes. Read her story below to find out how English changed Muzlefa’s life.

“English helps make my life better when I go to the doctor. When I first came to the USA my life was difficult because I did not speak English. [LCNV is] helping me to improve my English with speaking and writing, which will help me to pass my US Citizenship class.”

Today, LCNV partners with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to present a Naturalization Ceremony at the James Lee Community Center in Falls Church, VA. As we reflect upon the joy and triumph of these new citizens, it is important to recognize how learning English has helped them to become a part of their new home. In his essay, LCNV learner Orfan states “I live in the USA so I must learn English language to speak with American people.” Read Orfan’s essay below.

Please join us at today’s USCIS Naturalization Ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of these new citizens. Find more details here.

“I live in the USA so I must learn English language to speak with American people and recognize everything around me like shopping centers, banks, traffic signs, restaurants and government buildings. Also, I need to learn English to get a better job and to communicate with new people. My children’s problems in school need me to speak English with their teachers. So learning English in the USA gives me a new wide field of life and makes it easier to meet all my life needs.”
