“Learning English Has Made My Life More Interesting”

On the UN’s page for International Migrants Day, it states that “Throughout human history, migration has been a courageous expression of the individual’s will to overcome adversity and to live a better life.” On the journey to exploring and settling down in another country, there are many difficulties along the way, and language is an indispensable tool to navigate and become an integral part of the community. At LCNV, we salute the courage of our learners by providing them with the language education they need to thrive. Elena shares:

“Learning English makes my life better. I love to travel to different countries. English is a global language. A lot of people speak English, now I can talk with people and understand them. Before I couldn’t take a driver’s test because I couldn’t understand the instructor, now I have a license and drive a car. I made new friends. I can read English books. Learning English has made my life more interesting.”

LCNV supports individuals in our community to learn basic English skills, so that they can more fully participate in our community. If you believe in our cause, support us by volunteering with us or making a donation today.

“I will, in the future, improve my English and my home.”

At LCNV, we cannot stress enough that the language barrier faced by our students has an impact much larger than just daily communications. As Sajida talks about, not being able to speak English creates a sense of stress and isolation that makes her reluctant to leave home for long periods of times:

“When I came to the USA it was very hard and I had problems because I didn’t speak English and I didn’t know about American people. I didn’t leave my home for weeks and months. USA and Afghanistan laws are very different. I don’t have friends and I don’t have a credit card. In the USA things are very expensive.

I could not find a doctor when my daughter was sick. In the emergency room we waited a lot and the doctor came to see my daughter… My daughter was crying all night. I felt very bad.

Now I am a little bit better. I will, in the future, improve my English and my home and find a good job. I will be a good mother to my kids and help them study.”

For people like Sajida, learning English is empowering – it reconnects individuals with the community, and enables them to stand on their own feet once again. LCNV supports individuals in our community to learn basic English skills, so that they can more fully participate in our community. Varman’s Story

It is never easy to move to a new country and start a new life in a language you don’t know. When Varman made the decision to leave everything behind and settle down in the US, she has gone through a lot of hardships. In simple English, Varman expresses her thankfulness towards everyone that has helped her in her new home.

“When my family and I traveled to the USA we were very sad and lost because we left everything behind. When we met the American people here we were very welcomed and helped. We thank the USA and the American people. And I also thank my teachers.”

By sharing Varman’s essay, we would also like to thank you for all the support we have received during and beyond this Thanksgiving. Your support has helped our students achieve their goals and settle down in their new home. If you didn’t get a chance to donate on Giving Tuesday, you can always support us by visiting our volunteering or make a donation pages.
