Language barriers can be limiting for a person to maintain independence. It can also fuel feelings of insecurity and impact the development of social relations. With that in mind, LCNV’s English classes are not just aimed at teaching students the grammar and vocabulary they need, but also establishing class interactions with real life examples to prepare students for  actual interactions. For Santos, English has built a bridge connecting her with everyone around her– with the ability to speak English, she is now having additional interaction with her children and her community:

“I am Learning English. Now I can write, read, talk, and help my children in school and with homework. Learning to speak English is good for communication with everybody. I am learning English to get a driver’s license, and for my job.

By learning English I can be involved in my community, and to help other people at school, at church, and in my neighborhood.”

“You Light Our Path of Darkness”

Used5“You light our path of darkness,” that’s one of our students’ words when the class was wishing the teacher and class aide “a Happy Teachers Day” for Teacher Appreciation Week. During this unconventional time, these words reflect the positive and necessary impact of LCNV’s work, which is truly meaningful to all of us. Sonia talks about how important LCNV’s English classes are for her:

“Classes with teacher Elizabeth are helping me grow with English… I hope to learn more.

Learning English, I can help my daughters with their homework and I also learn something new along with them. Education is very important for us. [It] helps us learn and grow and fins a good job for our family.”

With LCNV’s Distance Learning Classes up and running, we are delighted to see students and teachers having a joyous time together. The energy, laughter, and positivity plowing in the classroom is precious and makes everything worthwhile! This week, we would like to share with you Katherin’s essay about how learning English has helped her to have more interactions with people in her life:

“My voice is important because in these classes they taught me with patience. I feel happy, satisfied. I like that we practice and we are free to express what we think about the topics that we carry out. This has helped me a lot for my daily life and [I am] encouraged to practice at home with my children!”

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week, and we want to have a big shout-out to all our Instructors! Every time we hear about our students’ success, we know that it is not separable from our instructors’ effort, and deeply feel thankful for the time and all the heart dedicated by them. Just like what Jale wrote in her essay- she tributes all the changes English has brought into her life to the help and support of her teachers:

“By learning English I can speak better and I can write better. I can remember and think in English. Sometimes I watch TV or see a movie. I can go shopping. English helps me. At my daughter’s school, English helps me to speak with the teachers.
I can go to the doctor. English helps me. Sometime English helps me with a neighbor. Since taking English class I can talk with my classmates. Speaking English helps me read and understand an English book.
That is all because of my English class teachers. Thank you!”

At LCNV, we cannot thank our teachers enough. Since we have moved our in-person classes to Distance Learning , Instructors have not only been teaching and helping our students to learn English ; but have been helping each student individually set up the online learning platforms and preparing them for this unconventional time, ensuring disruption to students’ learning process is limited.
